A neighbor's mistake built this town. In 1859 the Houston and Texas Central was laying the first big railroad up from Houston, and the older town of Washington-on-the-Brazos, where Texas had signed its declaration of independence, turned the rails down. A Navasota man named James Nolan did the opposite: he deeded eighty acres to pull the line through, and the trade followed the tracks. Washington faded, businesses migrated across the river to the new railhead, and Navasota grew into one of the more important shipping towns in the region, eventually a junction where three rail lines met, which is why Union Pacific still calls it Train Town USA. The other thing Navasota is known for came later and quieter: the songster Mance Lipscomb was born and lived here his whole life, and in 2005 the state named the town the Blues Capital of Texas in his honor, complete with a downtown statue and an August blues festival. Today it is a small city of around eight thousand in Grimes County, seventy-one miles northwest of Houston, running on agriculture, a restored historic downtown, and a steady stream of heritage and festival visitors.
